Bangladesh Navy has rescued 13 fishermen along with a fishing trawler that had been adrift in the Bay of Bengal after its engine broke down.

According to a Navy press release issued on Saturday night, the fishermen were provided with necessary medical treatment soon after being rescued.

The Navy said the trawler was found drifting in the deep sea about 20 miles off Kutubdia Lighthouse after its engine failed. Spotting a Navy ship nearby, the stranded fishermen tried to draw attention by flashing lights and waving their hands.

Patrolling naval ship BNS Shaheed Mohibullah quickly responded to the distress signal and rescued the fishermen along with their trawler.

After the rescue, the Navy provided them with first aid, medicines, food, and pure drinking water. The trawler and the fishermen were later brought safely to shore and handed over to their families and the vessel’s owner.

The fishermen said their trawler’s engine malfunctioned on November 6, leaving them adrift in the sea for three days.
