A student of the University of Dhaka (DU) fell from the ninth floor of Santosh Bhaban of Jagannath Hall, but escaped serious injury as he landed on the roof of a tin-shed house beside the building.
The student is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors said no major physical injury has been detected.
The incident took place around 1:00 am on Monday. The injured student is a first-year student of the Department of Development Studies at DU. He has been admitted to Ward 102 of the hospital.
When a PanBd correspondent visited the hospital on Monday afternoon, his family members were seen beside him. One of his legs was swollen, and bandages had been applied to parts of his head where the skin was grazed. He appeared stable and was talking with his family.
A physician involved in his treatment said no major physical damage has been found.
Jagannath Hall Students' Union Vice President (VP) Pallab Barman said X-ray, ECG and MRI tests were conducted on the student, and the results have so far been satisfactory.
"There is no sign of any broken bone. He has been kept under observation for 48 hours," he said.
Several Jagannath Hall staff members said they heard a loud noise around 1:00 am. Coming out, they found the student lying on the roof of the tin-shed house beside the building.
Staff members and students then brought him down from the roof and rushed him to DMCH.
Those concerned believe the student was saved from grave injury as he fell on the tin roof instead of directly onto the ground.
The hall authorities have not officially disclosed why the student fell. However, some of his classmates said he had been under mental stress over some personal issues for a few days. Several sources at the hall also mentioned a matter related to a personal relationship.
Jagannath Hall Provost Debashish Pal said, "We have heard that the incident occurred due to some personal reasons and mental stress. The full account will be known from the student himself once he fully recovers."
"He is doing quite well now. No serious wound has been found on his body," he added.
The provost also said the hall administration is looking into how the incident happened and whether there was any other reason behind it.
