Bangladesh and Malaysia are advancing efforts to deepen their bilateral relationship through a range of economic and trade initiatives, with the proposed Bangladesh-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) emerging as a major milestone in their growing partnership.
Sources said both countries have already finalised and approved the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the FTA negotiations, paving the way for the first round of formal discussions in the near future. Bangladesh has expressed its interest in hosting the inaugural round of talks.
Discussions are also underway on possible business-related Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to be signed during the upcoming engagements, although no final number or official announcement has been made so far. Similarly, negotiations are continuing on potential cooperation in halal product trade, including imports and exports between the two countries.
According to recent trade statistics from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and Bangladesh Bank, Malaysia has become Bangladesh’s second-largest trading partner among South Asian countries and remains an increasingly important economic partner.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, Bangladesh exported goods worth US$282.55 million to Malaysia, while imports from the Southeast Asian nation stood at US$2.26 billion. Malaysia ranked as Bangladesh’s seventh-largest source of imports during the period.
In the fiscal year 2025-26, Bangladesh’s exports to Malaysia reached US$283.88 million during July 2025-May 2026, while imports from Malaysia amounted to US$1.04 billion during July-December 2025. Malaysia maintained its position as Bangladesh’s seventh-largest import source.
Analysts believe that once implemented, the proposed FTA could significantly boost bilateral trade by creating greater market access for Bangladeshi products, particularly readymade garments, halal food items and agricultural products in Malaysia.
The agreement is also expected to open new avenues for Malaysian investment, technology transfer and broader industrial cooperation in Bangladesh.
Given the current momentum in diplomatic and economic relations, stakeholders expect the upcoming high-level meetings to deliver further progress in trade, investment and the development of the halal industry between the two nations.
