Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to make Malaysia his first overseas destination after assuming office, a move that diplomats and analysts view as a reflection of Bangladesh’s effort to maintain a balanced foreign policy amid growing regional competition.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to undertake a two-day official visit to Kuala Lumpur on June 21-22 at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with discussions expected to focus on labour migration, trade, investment, education and broader economic cooperation.
Although Tarique received his first invitation for a foreign visit from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortly after the February election, and later an invitation from Chinese Premier Li Qiang, the government ultimately chose Malaysia as the destination for his inaugural state visit.
Diplomatic observers say the decision carries strategic significance, as the first foreign visit of a newly elected head of government often signals the country’s foreign policy priorities.
Officials involved in the preparations said Dhaka considered the wider geopolitical landscape, particularly the strategic rivalry between India and China, before opting for a third country.
Analysts noted that Malaysia’s longstanding friendship with Bangladesh, its role as a key destination for Bangladeshi workers and expanding cooperation in trade, investment and education made it a suitable choice for the Prime Minister’s first official trip abroad.
The detailed agenda of the visit is yet to be finalised, though officials from both sides are working to arrange a bilateral meeting between Tarique and Anwar on June 22.
The visit is expected to go beyond labour-related issues and open new avenues for cooperation in manufacturing, investment and higher education, where Malaysia has already emerged as an important destination for Bangladeshi students.
