Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has greeted the Hindu community on the occasion of Durga Puja and urged the authorities to ensure adequate security during the celebrations.
In a statement issued by the party’s central publicity department on Friday, the Jamaat chief extended his greetings ahead of the major festival, which begins on September 28.
He said Bangladesh is widely admired across the world as a role model of communal harmony.
For ages, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians in our beloved motherland have been practicing their faith and celebrating their festivals in a peaceful and festive atmosphere. Such coexistence is rare in the history of the world,” Shafiqur Rahman said.
He noted that powerful countries and international organizations have often praised Bangladesh as a “moderate Muslim country” and a “role model of communal harmony.”
Referring to past remarks, he recalled that former Australian High Commissioner HE Grewe Will Cook once said Bangladesh is a land of communal harmony, where people of different faiths assist one another during Puja and Eid celebrations. Similarly, former EU delegation chief William Hanna described Bangladesh as a shining example of communal harmony, saying such coexistence is rare in the world.
Our religious festivals turn into nationwide celebrations with participation from all communities, which has elevated Bangladesh’s standing as a nation, the Jamaat chief added.
He hoped that this year’s Durga Puja would further strengthen the spirit of tolerance and harmony in national life.
I wish happiness, peace and prosperity for all communities, including the Hindu community. Mutual love, tolerance and respect are integral parts of our culture, and we must preserve this heritage of communal harmony, he said.
Calling for smooth celebrations, Shafiqur Rahman urged law enforcement agencies to provide sufficient security so that Hindu devotees can observe Durga Puja without any hindrance.
He also appealed to Jamaat members and peace-loving citizens to extend all-out support for ensuring a peaceful festival.
