Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will travel to the United States on September 22 to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Four politicians from three major political parties will accompany him to the UN session, officials said on Wednesday.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Tauhid Hossain disclosed the information at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.

The four politicians are Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of BNP; Humayun Kabir, International Affairs Secretary and Foreign Affairs Adviser of BNP’s Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman; Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Naib-e-Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami; and Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).

Since we are moving towards a transitional phase, the responsibility of running the country will gradually be handed over to the politicians. In this context, we have included them in the delegation, Tauhid Hossain said.

Chief Adviser Yunus is scheduled to deliver a speech at the UNGA on September 26. He will reach New York on a commercial flight on September 22.

According to Tauhid Hossain, in his address, the Chief Adviser will highlight the reforms undertaken in Bangladesh over the past year, following the July popular uprising, reflecting the hopes and aspirations of students and citizens, and reiterate the country’s firm commitment to establishing a genuinely democratic system through the upcoming elections.

The Foreign Affairs Adviser added that one of the government’s current priorities is to carry out necessary reforms reflecting people’s aspirations and to ensure a free, fair, and credible national election.

The UNGA session provides an opportunity to present our ongoing reform initiatives and the country’s journey toward strengthening democracy on a global platform, he said.

During the New York visit, Chief Adviser Yunus is expected to participate in several bilateral meetings, including a courtesy call on UN Secretary-General and a meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Tauhid Hossain noted that some meetings may be added or canceled at the last moment due to scheduling constraints.
