The government has approved a proposal to import 50,000 metric tonnes of rice from India at a cost of Tk 219 crore.
The approval came on Tuesday at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) held with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair.
According to meeting sources, under Package-1 of the 2025–26 fiscal year’s international open tender, the government will import 50,000 metric tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from India’s M/s Bagadia Brothers Pvt Ltd.
The price has been set at USD 359.77 per metric tonne, with a total expenditure of Tk 219.09 crore. The proposal was placed by the Ministry of Food.
Besides rice, the committee also approved proposals related to the import of fertilizer and wheat.
Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said the government decided to import 50,000 tonnes of rice to strengthen public food stocks.
He added that another 50,000 tonnes of wheat will be imported from the United States under a separate agreement.
