The government has approved the purchase of an additional 50,000 metric tonnes of rice from Singapore at a cost of Tk 216 crore 43 lakh.
The approval came on Monday during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Economic Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to meeting sources, under Package-6 for the 2025–26 fiscal year, the government will procure 50,000 metric tonnes of non-Basmati parboiled rice from Singapore-based Agrocorp International Pte Ltd through international open tendering.
The purchase will cost Tk 216 crore 43 lakh 87 thousand 745. The Food Ministry’s proposal for the import received the committee’s consent.
Earlier, on 18 November, the committee had approved the procurement of another 50,000 metric tonnes of non-Basmati parboiled rice under Package-5 from Aditya Birla Global Trading (Singapore) Pte Ltd for the 2025–26 fiscal year.
On 12 November, approval had also been granted for purchasing 50,000 metric tonnes of parboiled rice from Agrocorp International Pte Ltd under Package-4 for the same fiscal year.
In addition to rice, the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the import of several types of fertiliser during Monday’s meeting.
