The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has raised the gas tariff for fertiliser factories to Tk 29.25 per cubic metre, up from the previous rate of Tk 16.

The new price will come into effect on December 1 and remain valid until further notice, BERC announced at a press briefing on Sunday afternoon.

According to BERC, Petrobangla, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC, Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Ltd, Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution System Ltd, and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd submitted proposals between August 10 and 20 under Section 34(6) of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2000, seeking a revision of gas prices for the fertiliser category.

A public hearing on the proposals was held on October 6 in the presence of licence holders and other stakeholders. The commission also allowed written opinions until October 13.

After reviewing the submissions and analyses, BERC revised the consumer-end tariff for the fertiliser category under the authority granted by Sections 22(b) and 34 of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003.

The commission said the new rate was set after factoring in the government’s Tk 6,000 crore subsidy for LNG import expenses in FY 2025–26 and an additional Tk 1,075 crore from the Energy Security Fund.
