Information Commissioner SAM Mahfuzur Rahman has said journalism should prioritise ethics and responsibility rather than chasing views through misleading headlines that do not match the content of news reports.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief discussant at the closing ceremony of a two-day training workshop titled “Future Journalism on Youth's Canvas”, organised by Comilla University Press Club, on Saturday.
Criticising clickbait journalism, Mahfuzur Rahman said some headlines were deliberately written to attract views despite having little or no connection with the actual content of the reports.
He said he had never supported such view-driven journalism and remained opposed to the practice, which had now become a global phenomenon.
Describing journalism as an art, the Information Commissioner said those entering the profession must have a strong command of language and uphold ethical values.
A journalist is also a member of society, but one who is enlightened and knowledgeable, he said, stressing the need for comprehensive preparation through continuous learning.
Mahfuzur Rahman said knowledge had two important dimensions: developing intellectual capacity and acquiring technological expertise.
He said modern journalism was no longer confined to language skills alone, and journalists must also know how to make effective use of technology.
The Information Commissioner said journalism required a combination of intellect, knowledge, professional skills and ethical values.
The two-day workshop was held on November 6-7 to improve the writing quality, interest and professional skills of students and aspiring journalists.
Comilla University Social Science Faculty Dean Prof Dr Mohammad Razaul Karim, Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall Provost Associate Professor Md Harun and Mass Communication and Journalism Department Head Associate Professor Dr Md Belal Hossain attended the closing ceremony as special guests.
