Nepal has appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the head of its interim government, following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli amid days of violent street protests.

The Office of the President announced her appointment on Friday, and she was sworn in later in the night.

Karki, 73, who served as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice from July 2016 to June 2017, is widely known for her “zero tolerance” stance against corruption. Despite having no political background, she was chosen to lead the crisis-ridden nation.

During her tenure as Chief Justice, the judiciary’s tough stand against corruption drew both praise and criticism across political and social quarters.

Her appointment comes in the wake of massive youth-led demonstrations after the government shut down 26 social media platforms earlier this week. Protesters also voiced anger over entrenched corruption in the country.

Clashes between demonstrators and police turned deadly, leaving 19 people killed on the first day of violence. Oli stepped down the following day, but unrest has continued since.

Officials and observers say the current wave of bloodshed is the worst since the end of Nepal’s civil war and monarchy in 2008. At least 51 people have been killed in recent days.
