China has evacuated nearly two million people from the southern province of Guangdong ahead of the arrival of Super Typhoon Ragasa, described by meteorologists as the “King of Storms”.

Authorities in Zhuhai city are bracing for a deluge, with forecasts predicting a month’s worth of rain in a single day as the typhoon makes landfall. Residents have been urged to take all necessary precautions as the storm bears down on the region.

Ragasa, which has been tracking across the South China Sea for several days, has already wreaked havoc in neighbouring countries. In Taiwan, at least 14 people lost their lives after a lake burst, triggering severe flooding in the eastern part of the island. Geologists have characterised the flooding as a “tsunami from the mountains”.

The typhoon, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, is the strongest storm globally this year. It has brought heavy rainfall and violent winds to the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and southern China, leaving authorities on high alert.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, warning that the full impact of Ragasa could be devastating in the coming hours.
