Bangladesh has officially begun importing wheat from the United States for the first time under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, marking a new chapter in bilateral agricultural cooperation.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the governments of Bangladesh and the United States, a total of 440,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be imported.
As part of the first shipment, a vessel named MV NORSE STRIDE carrying 56,959 metric tonnes of wheat has arrived at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port today.
The import is being implemented by the Directorate General of Food under the Ministry of Food and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Officials said that sample testing of the imported wheat has already begun, and necessary measures are being taken for its prompt unloading once the testing process is complete.
Of the total consignment, 34,170 metric tonnes will be unloaded at Chattogram Port and the remaining 22,789 metric tonnes at Mongla Port.
