Film actor Mohammad Ashraful Haque, popularly known as Don, has been arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in connection with the murder case filed over the death of popular actor Salman Shah.

Immigration police detained Don at the airport on Sunday morning as he was preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, police said.

He was later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is investigating the case, according to CID officials.

CID Dhaka Metropolitan West Special Superintendent Golam Benazir said the investigating officer had earlier asked airport authorities to prevent the accused named in the case from leaving the country. A court had also issued a directive to this effect.

Don arrived at the airport around 6am to board a flight for Saudi Arabia, he said.

The accused was subsequently sent to court, the CID official added.

Salman Shah, whose real name was Shahriar Chowdhury Emon, was found dead at his residence on Eskaton Road in Dhaka on September 6, 1996, at the age of 25.

His death was initially treated as a case of unnatural death and was later investigated as a possible suicide. However, following a court order last year, a murder case was filed nearly three decades after his death.

The case is currently being investigated by the CID.
